The Garden at 403
The bright pink roses are a result of wanting a rose bush RIGHT NOW when it was July or August, and just the random bushes were left. Last year I researched and bought five new roses--the kind I actually wanted, and they are all doing fairly well. I have two New Dawn climbers, two Baron Double de Coubert (shrubby) and one Zepherine Drouhin also a climber. They are all fabulously fragrant and lovely in habit.
The fuschia painted daisies are also a result of either a sale or a late season urge. They are wonderful spot of color, though, as are the caution-orange lilies.

Spring Cleaning
I am starting with my office, (which involves the living room because some pieces of furniture are moving there, and that will require rearranging the living room) and which also requires the sorting of all my yarn. (Well, maybe it doesn't *require* sorting *all* of it, but that's what I plan to do). I took a break to order the this steam mop, which I understand will ruin my hardwood floors, but will work beautifully on my linoleum and tile. So I won't use it on the nicely finished hardwood downstairs, but I will use it on the upstairs floors which were finished with varnish or shellac about 100 years ago, and were under nasty carpet for the last 60 years or so.
I've emptied my (wonderful Dyson) vacuum several times already today, and taken trash out once.
Dealing with the yarn is a multipart project. Right now I'm separating the finished items from the yarn from the giant swatches. I'm actually throwing out a lot, rather than rolling 10-meter lengths of randon yarn into tiny balls because I "might use it sometime."
I have come across about 20 winter caps, lots of single mittens and a half-dozen baby garments. I should note that I've only started in on the yarn in the office, and not the stuff in the living room or upstairs.
I got distracted by trying to find the hack saw I bought a few weeks ago to cut the wire shelving. I want to install the shelving in one of the tall cabinets so that yarn can be more efficiently stored there. Alas I cannot find that damn thing.

Happy Birthday to Me
My present to myself turned out to be this enormous television, with which I can gorge myself on winter Olympics.

shocking, sickening images of haiti

this link
to Getty, it's a search on editorial, news-only images from the last 24 hours, keyword haiti.
the contrast is too much, and it perfectly exemplifies pop culture at its most despicable. photos of silicon-enhanced, b-list "celebrities" mugging for the camera at a gala fundraiser for haiti interspersed with photos from haiti: piles of rubble spiked with seven-days-dead corpses. skeletal survivors crouched near a broken pipe gathering water.
this completely automated grouping of photos makes as strong a statement as any artist or editor could.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Introduction.
Today I attended the introductory session of the MBSR class I'll be attending for the next 10 weeks. I am honestly enthused about this, and I am not quite sure what to expect, and of course I had some preconceptions or at least projections, mostly about my fellow classmates.
The session today was not with the group I'll be in during the session, as I'll be in fabulous Atlantic City for the intro class for my group, so none of the people there will be in my class. There were quite a few "central casting" types there. Somewhat broken or damaged or just slightly off appearing characters. Only two men in the group of 15. One man seemed pretty average, the other seemed wracked with shame and seemed to have been talked into attending by his spouse who "has just left her position in the church" and is starting a new chapter in her life.
There was also a low-talker (I was almost sure we'd all end up in puffy shirts) and a young mother of three who offered that she suffered from post-partum depression and raged at her husband for his beer drinking and tobacco chewing.
